Eliud Owalo has been confirmed as the new Gor Mahia patron following the death of long-serving patron and former Prime Minister the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga.
In an official communication from the club’s Executive Committee, Gor Mahia announced Owalo, who has been serving as the deputy patron, will assume the position on an interim basis.
“Following the sad demise of our long-serving club patron The Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga (Rest In Peace Baba, Rest In Peace Patron, Rest In Peace Agwambo), and in order to avoid the vacuum created thereby, the Gor Mahia Executive Committee wishes to notify the general public, the football fraternity in general and Gor Mahia Football Club members in particular, that the deputy Patron Hon. Eliud Owalo EGH will act as the club Patron with immediate effect,” the club said in its statement.

Odinga’s time as Gor Mahia patron
Raila Odinga’s connection with Gor Mahia spans decades, and under his patronage, the club enjoyed some of its most successful years. His consistent support, both morally and financially, helped stabilize the club and guided it back to dominance in Kenyan football.
During his tenure, Gor Mahia lifted multiple league titles, competed regularly in CAF tournaments, and became a symbol of pride for millions of fans across the region.
The club also emerged as a key platform for nurturing players who went on to represent Kenya and play abroad.
Among the notable stars who once donned the famous green jersey are former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech, Michael Olunga (Al Arabi, Qatar), Erick Ouma Marcelo(Rakow Czestochowa, Poland), Rooney Onyango (Sogndal FC, Norway), Alphonce Omija (Etoile du Sahel, Tunisia).

As Gor Mahia and the entire continent mourns the passing of Odinga, a leader whose influence transcended politics and shaped the club’s history, the appointment of Owalo ensures continuity and stability.

Owalo is famously remembered for purchasing the current team bus K’Ogalo is using during his spell as deputy patron.
