AFC Leopards eye winning start against Sofapaka in SportPesa League 25/26 title push
  • AFC Leopards eye winning start against Sofapaka as they begin push in 2025/26 SportPesa League campaign.
  • The match is scheduled for 4:00 PM EAT at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
  • Meanwhile, Kariobangi Sharks will begin their season against Bandari FC at Kasarani Annex, with kickoff set for 3:00 PM EAT on the same day.

AFC Leopards assistant captain Kennedy Owino says that as players, they are ready to go all the way in this new season to finally give their fans a long-awaited trophy to celebrate.

The 2025/26 SportPesa League kicked off on Friday evening with KCB collecting all three points after a 2-0 victory over Tusker FC at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Now, all eyes turn to Ingwe, who will be in the spotlight on Saturday, September 20, as they host Sofapaka at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, with kickoff slated for 4 PM EAT.

Owino, a key defender for Leopards, believes it’s high time the team go all out in pursuit of topflight glory – a title that has eluded them for over two decades, with their last league triumph dating back to 1998.

He emphasized that the team has strengthened its squad with new signings he believes will address the gaps that have held them back in recent seasons.

“We’ve brought in new players, and after training with them, we’ve seen their quality. They’ll definitely boost the team in areas we struggled with last season,” said Owino.

“We’re ready to deliver the results our loyal supporters deserve. This club deserves a trophy – not just for the team, but for the fans who’ve stood by us through thick and thin.”

AFC Leopards vs Sofapaka – revenge on the cards?

Ingwe kicks off their season against a familiar opponent Sofapaka, who denied them maximum points last season, with both fixtures ending in draws.

However, Owino, formerly of Posta Rangers, believes this time will be different. The team is coming off a solid preseason and is mentally and physically ready for the battle.

“We’ve had a good preseason, and everyone’s prepared. Sofapaka held us twice last season, so we know it won’t be easy. But we’ve studied what’s required, and we’re focused on collecting all three points. We’re ready.”

Head coach Ambani echoed Owino’s confidence, expressing that the entire squad is geared up not just for the opening match but for a full-throttle title chase. He also called on fans for continued support and prayers.

“We’ve prepared thoroughly to face Sofapaka, and we’re aiming to start the season on a positive note. Whoever is better prepared will win the day,” said Ambani.

“To the fans – I want to assure you, the team is ready. The players are committed to giving their all. With your support and prayers, we believe we can achieve great things. The more wins we gather, the closer we get to the league title.”

While AFC Leopards are eager to begin with a win, they’ll have to overcome a Sofapaka side that finished seventh last season and has momentum on their side.

Under head coach Ezekiel Akwana, Sofapaka has been one of the most active clubs in the transfer market, adding 21 new players, more than double Leopards’ nine signings.

With both sides determined to start the season on a high, fans can expect an electric clash.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Nairobi, just an hour before the Leopards’ match – Kariobangi Sharks will launch their campaign against Bandari FC at Kasarani Annex from 3:00 PM EAT.
