  • FKF, alongside the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for CHAN 2024, is planning to set up CHAN 2024 fan zones for Kenyans for the Zambia vs Kenya match.
  • The much-anticipated match will be held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, August 17, at 8:00 PM EAT.
  • This comes after CAF announced attendance restrictions, allowing only 27,000 fans to attend the match on Sunday.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF), in collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee for the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), is preparing to set up designated fan zones for Kenyan supporters who were unable to secure tickets for the Harambee Stars’ final group stage clash against Zambia.

The much-anticipated match will be held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, August 17, at 8:00 PM EAT.

Kenya has suffered a significant blow, with only 27,000 spectators allowed inside the stadium for the crucial Group A showdown as the national team fights to progress beyond the quarterfinals.

FKF plans CHAN 2024 fan zones for Zambia vs Kenya clash amid ticket chaos

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday morning, shortly after CAF announced the attendance restrictions, FKF President Hussein Mohamed revealed plans to establish secure public viewing areas to allow fans to enjoy the match in a safe and regulated environment.

We are also making arrangements to establish official fan zones where supporters who may not have the opportunity to attend the match in person can still cheer on Harambee Stars in a secure and controlled atmosphere,” Hussein stated.

“Details about these fan zones will be shared shortly as preparations continue.”

He also urged Kenyans to remain cooperative and responsible, especially those without valid match tickets.

He emphasized that the federation cannot sustain unbudgeted crowd control costs or continue absorbing penalties resulting from security breaches.

Kenya has already been fined during the previous three matches held at Kasarani, including the recent game against Morocco.

These violations prompted CAF to impose stricter security measures, citing unruly fan behavior and overcrowding.

Let’s unite and ensure Kenya continues to host major tournaments while presenting our passion for the beautiful game in a disciplined and organized manner.

For my team and I at the federation, we are deeply troubled by the escalating fines after every match.

These financial setbacks were not part of our initial planning and they are now forcing us to reassess our budgets and fundraising strategies,” Hussein added.

He concluded with a heartfelt appeal:

“It is my sincere request to all Kenyans to support the national team passionately. Please come to the stadium only if you have a valid ticket. If you don’t, kindly enjoy the match from home. We cannot stress this enough.”
