It happened at the Kasarani Stadium Presidential residence where a standoff saw top government officials including nominated Senator Karen Nyamu and Isaac Mwaura blocked from accessing the VVIP section ahead of the CHAN 2024 Group A opener where Harambee Stars secured a narrow 1-0 win over the Leopards.
The CHAN 2024 Local Organizing Committee (LOC) chairperson Nicholas Musonye disclosed exactly what caused the drama on Monday.

Why CHAN 2024 organizers denied top government officials access
According to Musonye, the Kasarani Stadium VVIP section can only accommodate 60 people, consisting of CAF officials and other guests including Kenya’s President William Ruto, invited guests and senior football stakeholders in the country.
“There is the Presidential tribute which is limited at both MISC Kasarani and the Nyayo Stadiums. We’ve reconfigured the two venues. What used to accommodate about 100 VVIPS now has a capacity of 60.
The other VIP section does not even hold 200. So, even top government officials who wish to attend must confirm their attendance early so we can allocate the tickets accordingly,” he explained.
Musonye’s plea to Kenyans ahead of Angola vs Kenya CHAN 2024 game
Musonye, who was also part of the media LOC committee during the 1987 All Africa Games, has urged prominent people seeking to watch the CHAN 2024 matches from the VIP sections to plan early in order to avoid disappointment.
“When they do not communicate that they are going to attend, that is when you find a lot of problems. Even for top government officials to enter these limited areas.
A top civil servant might arrive without prior notice, making it difficult for organizers to manage already allocated spaces,” added Musonye.
When will the Angola vs Kenya CHAN 2024 Group A match take place?
After their hard earned win, Harambee Stars will play Angola in their next Group A game on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
The highly-anticipated CHAN 2024 fixture is scheduled to kick-off at 20:00 East Africa Time (EAT) at the Kasarani Stadium.
