In Kampala, Uganda

Fijian-born Kenyan international Jone Kubu will start in the fullback position as the men’s national rugby 15s side, Kenya Simbas, begin their quest for a first-ever ticket to a Rugby World Cup tournament when they take on Uganda in the quarterfinals of the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 on Tuesday evening.

In the championship taking place in Kampala, Uganda, from 8-19 July, Kenya will be hoping to improve on their 2022 qualifying performance where they finished second behind Namibia.

As well as Kubu, head coach Jerome Paarwater has entrusted Timothy Omela and Griffin Chao in the wings with the Kabras duo of Walter Okoth and Bryceson Adaka forming the centre pairing.

Samuel Asati and Barry Young will lineup in the scrumhalf and flyhalf positions.

In the forwards department, Ephraim Oduor will partner alongside Eugene Sifuna and Wilhite Mususi as the front rowers.

Experienced captain George Nyambua will look to bring the best out of youngster Anycole Omollo, who will be playing in his first Rugby World Cup qualifier, in the locks department.

In the flanks, South African-based Thomas Okeyo will lineup alongside Patrick Sabatia, who gets his debut, while French-based Bethuel Anami will start as the number 8.

Two other players in Vincent Mwikhali and David Bunduki are also in line for their debut after being named as substitutes.

The Rugby Africa Men’s Cup 2025 champions will qualify directly for the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027. The runner-up will progress to the Asia/Africa Play-off.
