The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 has now progressed to the quarter-finals after an eventful Round of 16, where five European clubs, two South American sides, and one Saudi Arabian team secured spots in the last eight.
Unfortunately, none of the four African representatives advanced beyond the group stage.
However, the continental quartet consisting of Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), ES Tunis (Tunisia), and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) may have fallen short on the pitch, but their participation certainly was not fruitless.
Each club earned millions of dollars merely for appearing in the group stage.
The SportPesa Blog breaks down how much each of the African sides earned from their efforts in this prestigious tournament held in the United States.

Mamelodi Sundowns
The South African powerhouse captivated fans with their spirited performances and attractive style of play, narrowly missing out on progression to the round of 16.
Drawn into a formidable Group F, Sundowns faced Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense, both of whom are now quarter-finalists as well as South Korea’s Ulsan HD FC.
They opened the tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ulsan.
In their second fixture, they battled bravely but succumbed 4-3 to Dortmund, and their final group match ended in a goalless stalemate against Fluminense, a game they had to win to keep their hopes alive.
Ultimately, it was Dortmund and Fluminense who advanced.

Despite their exit, Sundowns emerged as Africa’s highest-earning club in the tournament, collecting $12.55 million (KES 1.6 B).
This comprised:
- $9.55 million for participation
- $2 million for one win
- $1 million for a draw
To put this into context, they earned six times more than their runner-up prize money ($2 million) in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League.
Thus, while their tournament run ended early, the club owned by CAF president Patrice Motsepe did significantly boosted its financial reserves.
Espérance Sportive de Tunis
The Tunisian titans put in a commendable showing, managing one win despite two tough losses.
Placed in Group D alongside Chelsea, Flamengo, and Los Angeles FC, they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Flamengo and a 3-0 loss to Chelsea, but they closed their campaign on a high note by edging LAFC 1-0.
That victory earned them an additional $2 million, bringing their total earnings to $11.55 million (KES 1.5B) an astonishing 12 times more than the $900,000 they received after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League.
Al Ahly
Much was expected of the reigning African champions, but their campaign failed to meet those expectations.
In Group A, Al Ahly drew their opening game 0-0 with Inter Miami, lost 2-0 to Palmeiras, and played out a thrilling 4-4 draw with FC Porto.
Despite strong moments, they failed to secure a single victory.
Nevertheless, two draws netted them an additional $2 million, adding to their $9.55 million participation reward for a total of $11.55 million (KES 1.5B).
This is nearly ten times the amount they earned for reaching the CAF Champions League semifinals the previous season.

Wydad Casablanca
Wydad were the only African side to exit without earning any additional match bonuses, having lost all three of their Group G fixtures.
Their group was unforgiving: they lost 2-0 to Manchester City, 4-1 to Juventus, and 2-1 to UAE side Al Ain.
As a result, Wydad took home only the base participation amount of $9.55 million (KES 1.2 B).
