On the other side, Gor Mahia failed to defend their Premier League title for the third consecutive time, with Kenya Police emerging as champions.
According to Otieno, the team is now laser-focused on the FKF Cup to at least end the season with a major trophy and give their fans something to cheer about after missing out on the domestic double.
Our fans deserve better because their expectation was for us to win both cups (the Premier League and FKF Cup). Now that Police have already won the league, we have to put up a strong fight on Sunday so we can make our fans happy,” Otieno explained ahead of the match.
The Gor Mahia skipper emphasized the significance of the upcoming clash, expressing how much the cup means to the squad.
This game means a lot to me and my teammates because we are used to becoming champions every season. I think this is our last hope this season, and as one of the most senior players in the team, I have to keep pushing the boys and make sure we give our best over the weekend,” he added.
Despite being the favourites on paper, Otieno stressed that they are not underestimating Nairobi United and are preparing with the utmost seriousness. He also issued a rallying call to the fans.
Yes, Nairobi United are a good team, and for them to reach the finals means they’re strong. So we have to make sure we approach the game with the seriousness it deserves. I also urge our fans to turn up in large numbers and give us the support we need. As players, we will make sure we deliver a positive result.”
