The Kenya national 7s team, Shujaa, will face Spain in the Singapore 7s main cup semifinals on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 9:34 AM EAT at the Singapore National Stadium.

With no quarterfinals scheduled for this sixth leg of the HSBC SVNS World Series, Shujaa reached this milestone following a dominant performance in their pool matches.

They triumphed over Ireland 17-7 and narrowly defeated France 10-7, topping Pool B with six points.

Meanwhile, Dubai SVNS finalists Spain advanced to the semifinals after defeating Uruguay 21-12 in their first Pool C match and securing a 7-28 victory over Australia in their second.

This semifinal clash will mark the third time Kenya are meeting Spain.

In Cape Town, where they were placed in the same Pool B, Spain narrowly won 14-7.

The second encounter took place at the Hong Kong Sevens where Kenya avenged the loss with a dominant 19-0 win in Pool C late last month.

Although Kenya is set to compete in the relegation/promotion playoffs in Los Angeles this May after finishing outside the top eight in the series standings, their performance in this sixth leg has been exemplary.

If Kenya reaches the final, it will be a historic achievement, as they aim to recapture the glory of 2016 when they last won the main cup title at the Singapore Sevens, defeating Fiji 30-7.

Amaitsa upbeat after inspiring Shujaa’s semifinal charge

Following Kenya’s first semifinal appearance since 2018 at the Hong Kong Sevens, Nygel Amaitsa reflected on the win against France, stating that, despite their impending playoff fate, the team had to keep fighting.

“For us as Kenya, the boys, we just had to keep pushing, no matter how we went to the playoffs. “We just had to prove that we are Kenya,” Amaitsa told RugbyPass.

He further emphasized that despite their struggles in other legs of the circuit, they had never given up.

Throught the Challenger (Series) we always thought that we were the best so coming to the HSBC (HSBC SVNS), our first season, we just had to prove that we can be here,” Amaitsa explained.

For Vancouver and the other circuits, we performed poorly but we just had to believe then come back strong. Our goal coming into Singapore was being number nine (on the standings) because all the other teams below us don’t have enough points to reach us.”

Amaitsa also revealed how they broke France’s four-match winning streak over them this season.

“When we went to the changing room after Ireland, we just had to defeat France, we never had an option because we had to play our best and the results came.”
