Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Sasha Mutai has dismissed claims that he has been suspended from the board, asserting that he remains the chairman until legal actions are taken against him.
On March 6, the Kenya Rugby board circulated a letter, seen by the SportPesa blog, alleging the suspension of Sasha from all board activities.
“Following a duly convened board meeting on 6th March 2025 at 5:00 PM, the Board has unanimously resolved to temporarily suspend Chairman Mr. Alexander Kiplagat Mutai from all board activities, pending a governance review at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 24th March 2025.
The KRU Board remains committed to upholding the integrity, stability, and best interests of Kenyan rugby,” the letter stated.

In an interview with Citizen TV on the morning of Monday March 10, Sasha confirmed receiving the letter regarding his dismissal from the Vice Chairman Moses Ndale.
However, he stated that the action is void as no legal procedure was followed for it to be valid.
“I am still the chairman. They say I am suspended. I saw the letter coming from the ‘acting chairman,’ Vice Chairman Ndale, but all of this is null and void because the proper process was not followed. We have our constitution, and we also have the Sports Act.
Our constitution stipulates that a properly constituted board meeting must take place, which is today (Monday), as we have monthly board meetings every second Monday of the month,” Sasha explained to Citizen Sport on Monday.

He further clarified that the suspension meeting was not conducted lawfully, thus invalidating anything discussed there, noting that the alleged meeting was convened by the secretary, Raymond Olendo, who lacks the authority to do so.
“Last week, the secretary called for a board meeting. He has no power to do that, so anything discussed at that meeting, which was essentially just a ‘Kamukunji,’ is null and void,” he added.
Regarding his alleged suspension, Sasha claimed that two motions from Mwamba RFC and Kakamega Homeboyz were submitted to the board after the deadlines, which he believes triggered the ensuing disputes.
“What happened was that Mwamba sent in three motions on Sunday, just minutes before the deadline, because they knew who they were dealing with.
The next day, a motion came from Kakamega Homeboyz, but of course, it was late and wasn’t going to be considered. That was actually targeted at me,” he explained.
Sasha also stated that he had been removed from the WhatsApp groups and that his accounts had been frozen.
However, his lawyers are addressing the matter as he anticipates a meeting with potential sponsors, including the leading betting firm in Kenya SportPesa.
“The board meeting today (Monday) will proceed as scheduled. My lawyers are handling it because I’ve been blocked from everything—emails, accounts—I’m kicked out of the WhatsApp groups. We have meetings with potential sponsors this week, so my lawyers are on it,” he concluded.
