The Kenyan women’s national rugby sevens team, also known as the Kenya Lionesses, continued with their impressive winning run at the 2025 World Rugby HSBC Challenger Series on Saturday night.

The Lionesses hammered South Africa 17-0 in an epic second leg final that was held at the Athlone Stadium, in the scenic City of Cape Town to bag their second title in a row.

The hosts started the match on a high and their super star Nadine Roos could have put them 5-0 ahead when she squeezed past the Kenyan players but a crucial tackle from Judith Okumu saved the East Africans.

However, with less than three minutes remaining to the end of the first half, Naomi Amuguni took advantage of a defensive blunder from their opponents to score the first try for Kenya and give them a 5-0 lead.

The Lionesses continued with their brilliant display, bullying the South Africans every time they got possession of the ball.

Despite the two nations fighting hard to score the next try, the first half ended with Kenya enjoying a slim lead.

As the game continued, the South Africans tried their best to draw level but lack was not on their side.

The Springbok Women, as they are commonly known by rugby fans, later found themselves trailing the Lionesses 10-0 midway through the second half.

The well executed try came courtesy of the red hot Sharon Auma, who showed incredible pace to escape from the South African players.

A few seconds later, Freshia Odour put the game behind the reach of the South Africans to give the Dennis Mwanja coached charges a huge 15-0 lead which increased to 17-0 after the conversion.

This is the second consecutive title for the East African side which defeated South American side Argentina 17-12 to triumph in the first leg final.

The Lionesses will now shift their focus to the third and final leg of the Challenger Series that is expected to be held in Krakow, Poland between April 11 and April 12.

Kenya, who have higher chances of finishing inside the top four nations by the end of the Challenger Series, will then qualify for the HSBC SVNS promotion/relegation playoffs that will take place in Los Angeles, United States from May 4 to May 5.

The promotion/relegation playoff tournament will involve eight nations (the top four from the Challenger Series and the bottom four from the ongoing HSBC SVNS Series).
