Mathare United midfielder Paul Kinyanjui has explained the significance of the solo goal he scored against Kenya Police FC, a goal that secured three points for his team and ended the Police FC’s 13-match unbeaten streak.
Kinyanjui, who came on as a substitute in the second half, struck late on Thursday, February 20th, at the Dandora, denying the law enforcers the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table.
For Mathare, the win lifted them out of the relegation zone, moving them into 12th place with 25 points from six wins, seven draws, and eight losses.
Reflecting on the win,, Kinyanjui explained that being benched by the coach is not a reflection of his abilities but rather a tactical decision by John Kamau, who always recognizes the right moment to introduce him.
“The coach always tells us this, and I have always believed in it: I’m not being benched because I’m not good enough to start. I come off the bench because the coach knows when to bring me into the game, and I make a difference,” Kinyanjui shared with the club media.

He added that even though he does not always play a full 90 minutes, he maintains a positive mindset, making the most of the time he is given.
“It’s about staying positive, and when you are given limited minutes, you make the most of them and do something impactful,” he remarked.
Kinyanjui further discussed the significance of his goal compared to others he has scored for the Slum Boys.
“All goals are important, but today’s, was particularly crucial for us. Given our position on the table, this goal has propelled us up the standings, and it was vital for our morale and progress,” he explained.
This is not the first time Kinyanjui has scored in stoppage time.
In their first leg match against Posta Rangers in November 2024, he scored a second goal in the 90+ minute to secure a 2-0 victory for his team.
Additionally, he ensured Mathare earned a point in a 1-1 draw against Sofapaka in their first leg match last September.
With Kinyanjui eager to continue his impact off the bench, John Kamau’s side will look to build on this victory when they face Kariobangi Sharks in their next match this Saturday.
