The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has appointed Paul Odera as the new Director of Rugby and Pathway Manager, effective from 1st February 2025.
In an announcement made by the Kenya Rugby governing body on Monday, 3rd February, the appointment of Odera aims to enhance the development and performance of rugby at all levels in Kenya.
Having previously served as the Head Coach for the Kenya U20 national team, known as Chipu, where he successfully led the team to qualification for the 2019 World Rugby U20 Trophy, Odera’s outstanding coaching achievements were key factors in his selection for the role.
In addition to his work with Chipu, he has also been the Head Coach of the Kenya Simbas.

Under his leadership, the Simbas achieved significant milestones and demonstrated their potential on international platforms.
His guidance has been pivotal in nurturing young talent and fostering a competitive spirit within the team.
Speaking during his appointment, Odera expressed excitement about the new role and outlined his goals.
“I look forward to achieving the three-legged African stool, borrowed from Nobel Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai,” said Odera.
“The three pillars are: Pillar 1: Transformational Leadership Pillar 2: Science- and data-driven planning and decision-making Pillar 3: Developing a Kenyan rugby identity based on the basics done well, with a focus on the details of technical, tactical, physical, and psychological aspects.”

KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai expressed confidence in Odera’s appointment, citing his achievements as a player, coach, and captain of the national team.
He hopes Odera will help deliver the 2023-2028 KRU Strategic Plan, which began implementation last year.
“Paul Odera has done it all in Kenya Rugby, as a player, Captain and as a Coach at age grade level all the way to the National Team, the Simbas. A consummate Rugby man, I welcome him to his new position of Director of Rugby.
He will be a key member of the team which will help execute the KRU Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028 which was adopted at last years AGM. I wish him all the best in his new role as we look forward to taking Kenya Rugby to unprecedented heights.” Sasha stated
KRU CEO Thomas Odundo also welcomed Odera’s appointment, noting that his extensive experience would be invaluable in the development programs and player pathways.
“Paul is a very welcome addition to the Secretariat and brings immense knowledge and experience to us. His previous role as a school teacher will be particularly useful in our development programs. We welcome him and will offer the needed support for him to succeed in his role.” He said.

Odera’s appointment comes at a crucial time when KRU is focused on strengthening its frameworks for player development and enhancing the overall competitiveness of Kenyan rugby at both the regional and global levels.
