Kenyan sports persons registered some impressive performances in 2024 in different fields especially athletics.

Some of them like Beatrice Chebet, Faith Kipyegon, Michael Olunga and Ruth Chepngetich broke records while others such as Aldrine Kibet and Patrick Odongo made Kenya hopeful about the future. 

As Kenyans around the world start a new year, there are huge expectations placed on their sports  men and women, who are set to represent the nation in various championships.

SportPesa Blog takes a look at seven sporting events that Kenyans should get excited about in the busy 2025 calendar.

African Nations Championship (CHAN)

Football fans around the country have every reason to get excited since Kenya is expected to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania in 2025.

Preparations are currently at the final stages to make the continental showpiece that is scheduled to take place between February 1 and February 28 a success. 

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released a statement on Monday disclosing that the draw will be held on January 15 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

Some of the countries that are set to compete in the tournament include Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco and Ivory Coast.

Safari Rally Kenya

One of the most challenging and exciting events in the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Safari Rally Kenya will be held in Naivasha between March 23 and March 25, 2025.

According to the organizers, two new stages that will be situated in Morendat Farm and Camp Moran have been introduced this year.

HSBC SVNS

The Kenya national rugby sevens men’s team popularly known as Shujaa will continue to fight for bragging rights in the World Rugby HSBC SVNS tournament in 2025.

The Kevin Wambua coached side has already taken part in two legs that were staged in Dubai and Cape Town and according to their performances, Kenyans have enough reasons to get excited.

The next leg of the competition is expected to be held in Perth, Australia between January 24 and January 26.

After Perth, Shujaa will then travel to Vancouver (February 21 to February 23) before participating in the Hong Kong Sevens between March 28 and March 30. The dates and venues for the remaining legs will be announced later in the year. 

World Athletics Indoor Championships

The first stop for Kenyan runners in 2025 is the World Athletics Indoor Championships that is set to be held in Nanjing, China between March 21 and March 23, 2025.

Some of the runners that are likely to feature in the event include the reigning 100m African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala, Mary Moraa and Faith Kipyegon.

African Cup of Nations (AFCON) U20 tournament

Meanwhile, the Kenya U20 boys national football team that goes by the name Rising Stars is set to make its African Cup of Nations (AFCON U20) debut in April.

The Rising Stars are among the teams that will compete for the continental bragging rights in the tournament that will take place between April 26 and May 18 in Ivory Coast.

Aldrine Kibet

Although Kenya goes into the tournament as one of the underdogs, they have what it takes to conquer Africa based on their recent performances.

The team, which has fast-rising stars such as Aldrine Kibet, and Amos Wanjala finished second in the qualifiers that were held in Tanzania in 2024.

World Athletics Ultimate Championships

The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships will go down between September 11 and September 13 in Budapest, Hungary.

Athletes will wear the national team kits as they fight for the mouthwatering prize money that will be on offer.

According to the World Athletics, winners in each event are expected to receive a whopping $150,000 (approximately Ksh 19,387,500) in prize money.

Finally, the biggest event of the year in Kenya’s sporting calendar is planned to be staged in Tokyo, Japan between September 13 and September 21.

The eagerly awaited World Athletics Championships will give Kenyan athletes a chance to showcase their talents and make names for themselves and their country.

Runners like the reigning 5000m Olympic Games champion Beatrice Chebet have already announced their intentions of winning a gold medal, thus there is every reason for Kenyans to start getting excited.
