Kenyan members of the national assembly were humbled by their Ugandan colleagues in the opening match of the 2024 East Africa Community Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa.

The women’s volleyball team tried their level best to win the match but their opponents were too strong for them.

In the end, the Ugandan legislators secured the victory in straight sets of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-14 to put themselves a step closer to winning the title.

Reacting after the disappointing defeat, Kenya’s team captain Faith Gitau stated that the games are more than just winning.

“These games are not just about competition, they are about building bridges and strengthening the bonds of friendship among us as East Africa parliamentarians,” explained the Nyandarua County women’s representative.

Gitau’s sentiments were echoed by her Ugandan counterpart Hellen Nakimuli, who described the championship as a game-changer.

“The East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games provide an opportunity for us to connect beyond legislative chambers, promoting collaboration and mutual understanding,” she ended.

Besides Kenya and Uganda, policy-makers from six other East African countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi will participate in this year’s edition.

The games which are being staged at the Aga Khan Academy grounds are expected to end on Wednesday, December 18.

Elsewhere, various East African stakeholders have called for increased investment in sports to improve the economy of the continent and unify the region.

These stakeholders made the plea during a discussion that was held earlier today at the same venue.

Vihiga County women representative Beatrice Adagala called on people with influence to advocate for policies that can help every nation to grow.

“As legislators, we must enact strong laws that not only promote sports at the regional level but also trickle down to our countries,” commented Adagala.

Moreover, she lauded the efforts that are being made to make sports an integral part of the local economic development.
