Cape Town 7s

The Kenya national sevens team head coach Kevin Wambua is confident that Shujaa will perform better at the Cape Town 7s following their tenth place finish at the Dubai Sevens last weekend.

Shujaa arrived in South Africa on Monday in preparation for the Cape Town 7s taking place from 7-8 December, marking the second leg of the 24/25 HSBC SVSNS Series.

Wambua stated that the team has adapted well to their training camp in South Africa after having one gym session and two field sessions; one focused on refining their attacking and defensive frameworks while the other aimed at improving their concentration.

“The boys are settling well in Cape Town. We had two pitch sessions. One was to clean up our attacks and defense frameworks, while the other one was to just have awareness on how the opposition is going to play,” Wambua explained.

He further expressed confidence in the team’s fitness and form, divulging that there is nothing to worry about.

“Good feeling, the boys are looking good, they are fit, no injury concerns, so we are really ready to go,” added the experienced tactician.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s matches, Wambua is optimistic that the team will avenge their defeat against Australia and hopes to top their pool to advance to the semifinals.

He believes they have addressed the mistakes that they made in Dubai and they are now focused on getting the points they need.

“The format has changed a bit. We have to top the pool to go straight to the semifinals. For us, we know it’s about building the points and momentum for the players.

Our main focus now is to see how we will get the double against Australia. Yes, we made a few errors in the last game, but now we have corrected them and our focus is to take the points against Australia,” commented the one-time Kenya Lionesses tutor.

Shujaa are placed in a tough Pool B alongside Dubai 7s finalists Spain and Australia who defeated them in the final group A match.
