The Kenya national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, is now preparing for the second leg of the World Rugby Series in Cape Town, South Africa, after finishing 10th in the first round in Dubai.

The second round is set to take place from December 7-8.

Shujaa has been placed in Group B, alongside Spain, the Dubai finalists, and Australia, who defeated them in their final group A match.

After a disappointing performance in Dubai, Shujaa head coach Kevin Wambua highlighted areas that need improvement ahead of the next round.

“We need to be clinical, especially in our restarts. We need to know that we cannot play without the ball, so this is an area we will prioritize heading into Cape Town,” Wambua told Sportpesa Blog.

He also mentioned that his team needs to work on handling game pressure and keeping possession for a bit longer.

“We will also prioritize our kick accuracy so we can contest and regain the ball as well we need to improve how we finish games. I think we start well, but towards the end, we don’t manage ourselves as well. So, we will work on how to absorb pressure,” he added.

Shujaa captain Samuel Asati echoed these sentiments, believing that with improvements in specific areas, they can achieve success in Cape Town.

“We need to polish our restarts, including the kick-offs and lineouts, as we were a bit slow. Our set plays also need work. Our game plan has carried us so far, and we need to stick to it,” he told Sportpesa Blog.

In their return to the World Rugby Series in Dubai, Shujaa began with a disappointing 24-19 loss to France, followed by a 22-17 victory over South Africa’s Blitzboks.

However, they were defeated 31-14 by Australia, which meant they did not make it through to the quarterfinals.

On Sunday, they made a comeback, triumphing over Ireland 21-7, earning a spot in the 9th place final, but ultimately losing to Uruguay 15-7, finishing in 10th place.
