Etienne Ndayiragije

Kenya Police FC’s new head coach Etienne Ndayiragije has identified several key areas for improvement to help the team rise from the bottom of the league to fighting for top honours.

On Sunday evening, Police suffered their second defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to AFC Leopards at the Dandora Stadium.

After the match against AFC Leopards, the newly appointed Burundian head coach pointed out that the players’ mentality is a major issue.

He emphasized that improving their mindset will be his primary focus to help them believe in their ability to win matches.

“First of all, we will need to lift the players’ mental strength. We need to bring them back to a winning mindset and make them believe they can win any match. If they go into a game, they must be determined to win,” Etienne said.

He also stressed the need to improve the players’ physical and technical abilities, noting that their performance is currently lacking in these areas.

“We will have to work on their physical aspect, which is low. They need more technical training to ensure they can keep possession and perform well with the ball,” he added.

Etiene, 45, also stated his immediate focus is winning the upcoming match against Nairobi City Stars to allow for some breathing space.

He believes that securing three points in this match will be a significant step toward turning the club’s performance around.

“The most important thing right now is to focus on our next game. If we secure the three points against Nairobi City Stars, I will sit down with the players, learn from them and we will have a clear direction moving forward by the end of December,” he noted.

Last season, under Salim Babu, Police FC finished in third place with 57 points and won the FKF Cup, earning a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup for the very first time in their history.

Missing key players like top scorer Tito Okello who left during the last transfer window and David Messi Owino, who is currently injured, may have contributed to the team’s struggles, prompting the management to make changes to the technical bench that resulted in the sacking of Salim Babu and hiring of Ndayiragije.
