The 2024 Elgon Cup has been delayed after a mutual agreement between the Kenya Rugby Union and the Uganda Rugby Union.

The tournament was scheduled to start on November 2 and end on November 9, but after discussions held over the weekend, stakeholders agreed to push it forward.

According to a press statement signed by top officials from both countries, the first leg of the event will not be held in Kampala as it was initially planned.

The first leg, which will now go down on Saturday, November 9, has been moved to Kenya’s capital City Nairobi while Kampala is expected to host the second leg on Sunday, October 16.

“Following a consultative meeting held on Saturday 26th October 2024 between the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) and the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), a joint decision has been reached on a revised scheduled for the 2024 Elgon Cup by both parties.

Kenya will host the first leg of the tournament, with the second leg being held in Uganda,” read part of the communique.

The Presidents of both unions further promised to do their best to organize an exciting tournament.

“We appreciate all fans’ and stakeholders’ understanding and support and look forward to delivering an exciting tournament on the new dates,” the statement ended.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Elgon Cup will not be staged this year following a special request by KRU.

The Kenyan union asked for the cancellation of the event in order to allow players to prepare for the upcoming Africa Rugby 7s scheduled for November 9 to November 10 in Ghana.
