Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia patron Raila Odinga has promised to give the team a cash reward of one million shillings after the Kenyan giants staged an incredible comeback at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday evening to progress to the 24/25 CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round.

Playing against South Sudan outfit Al Merreikh Bentiu in the First Preliminary Round, Gor recorded an impressive 5-1 win in the second leg to recover from a 1-0 defeat in the first leg played in Juba a week ago as they progressed to the final qualification round with a 5-2 aggregate win.

The result was made even more impressive by the fact that K’Ogalo showed incredible character as they bounced from conceding early in the match which left them needing at least three goals to secure their ticket to the next round.

Gor Mahia complete turnaround

The team managed to surpass the required number as a brace from Ronney Onyango and goals from Chris Ochieng, Alpha Onyango and Alphonce Omija completed the turnaround.

After the conclusion of the match, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier delivered the good news to the players in the dressing room.

“The club patron Raila Odinga has promised to give you a cash reward of 1 million Kenyan shillings following your exemplary performance. He was at the game but left for Kisumu for another engagement and he has promised to send the money to me which I will give to the captain who will liaise on how to share it among the players as well as the technical bench,” Rachier said.

Gor Mahia also received a token of 500,000 shillings from newly appointed Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who had promised the team the amount if they managed to progress to the next round.

With their win, Gor Mahia secured a ticket to the Second Preliminary Round where they will face Egyptian giants Al Ahly with the matches scheduled to take place in September.

The first leg will take place from around 13-15 September with the second leg set for around 20-22 September.
