Gor Mahia are out to extend their lead at the top of the Kenya Premier League table when they play Mathare United on Wednesday.

Gor are reeling from a morale-boosting 2-1 win against Kenya Police on Saturday that left them top with 37 points after 16 games.

Now they await a Mathare United side who are in 15th place with 13 points despite getting three wins from their last 5 games.

Speaking to SportPesa’s Blog on Wednesday during their training session at the Kasarani Annex, head coach Jonathan McKinstry seemed rather optimistic.

“The mood is great and today’s training was light in preparation for the game tomorrow. We know it won’t be an easy game but we are ready for the challenge.

“Mathare have picked up form in recent weeks and coming off that huge win against Police, we need to stay grounded and remain focused as we get on the pitch tomorrow,” Mckinstry stated.

The game will kick off at 3pm at the Kasarani Annex and Gor are eager for the 3 points that would further extend their stay atop the KPL log.

Gor and KPL top scorer Benson Omala was on target to gift Gor the win against Police last Saturday, taking his tally to 16 goals in as many games.

The forward is in great form and his teammates are all hoping it can continue as they strive to win a record-extending 20th Kenya Premier League title.

“Omala is very talented and personally I believe we are seeing the next Dennis Oliech. As long as he keeps scoring and the team remains constant, we are confident of another title,” club captain Philemon Otieno stated.

“The games against Mathare are never easy. We know they will come guns blazing but we have proved we are solid enough to withstand any challenge,” he added.

Gor Mahia edged Mathare 1-0 in both matches last season and the slum boys are seeking revenge, having not beaten their opponents in the league since 2019.

It’s been two years without a title for Gor but now since the return of their supreme partners SportPesa, they seem to be on track to add another trophy to their cabinet.
