The Tuesday night Coppa Italia final will give either Serie A leaders AC Milan or their San Siro-sharing rivals Inter Milan a chance to enter the semis as they hunt for a first piece of silverware in the 2020/21 season.
In the league, Milan are still at the top of the standings with 43 points, despite coming off a 3-0 thrashing at home against Atalanta over the weekend.
Antonio Conte’s Inter are two points behind the league leaders in second place and will have a statement to make as they head into the second Derby della Madonnina of the season.
The Nerazzurri have not lifted the trophy for a decade and are now set on a first domestic double since the Jose Mourinho era.
However, ahead of the 25th Derby in Coppa Italia history – where the overall ledger sees them ahead by virtue of 10 wins to Inter’s seven – Pioli’s staggeringly consistent side have just started to come off the boil.
Milan have lost only two Serie A matches all season, both defeats have come in recent weeks – at home to Juventus and, most recently, Atalanta.
Here is what you need to know before placing a wager on the midweek encounter.
What time does Milan vs Inter start?
The game kicks off at 10:45pm Kenyan time at the San Siro.
Milan vs Inter team news
Stefano Pioli’s customary 4-2-3-1 setup will be without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks and Pierre Kalulu is also likely to be benched.
Newly-signed Fikayo Tomori, who joined the Italian giants from Chelsea a couple of days ago, is also available for selection to make his debut.
Ismail Bennacer and Hakan Calhanoglu are still sidelined through injury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will have the onus to lead the attacking line.
Roberto Gagliardini or Stefano Sensi could return to the Inter starting line-up, most likely to replace Arturo Vidal but the attacking line will remain unchanged, led by Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.
Milan vs Inter head to head
It’s very close when it comes to matches played between these two sides with AC Milan winning 23 times, including a 2-1 triumph this season already, compared to Inter’s 22 wins from the 56 matches played.
The remaining 11 matches have resulted in a draw.
Milan vs Inter current form
Milan have won three and lost two of their last five matches, most recently the 3-0 hammering by Atalanta.
Their rivals Inter are also coming off a barren draw against Udinese on the weekend, adding to another stalemate and loss in their last five games, winning just twice.
Milan vs Inter prediction
There will definitely be goals from both sides in this encounter as they seek to stamp their authority in the Coppa Italia and book a slot in the semi-final.
Despite Milan enjoying a better run of form, I foresee extra time deciding this particular encounter.
