Gor Mahia win 22nd SportPesa League title
  • Gor Mahia win 22nd SportPesa League title with two games to spare.
  • This follows their arch-rivals AFC Leopards’ 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet on Sunday, May 24, at Kericho Green Stadium.
  • Gor, who still have a game in hand against Mara Sugar, are now four points clear of the maximum points Ingwe can reach, with Ingwe having only one match left to play.

Gor Mahia are the SportPesa League champions for the 2025/26 season for a record 22nd time after their perennial rivals, AFC Leopards, lost 2-1 away to APS Bomet in the league’s penultimate fixture.

Sunday’s result at Kericho Green Stadium leaves K’Ogalo, who still have a game in hand, sitting four points clear at the top of the table.

With Ingwe left with only one match to play, Gor are now set to lift the title when they face Nairobi United in their final game of the season after completing their halted penultimate clash against Mara Sugar.

Coming into this encounter, Ingwe, who will now have to wait another season to claim the crown they have craved for for over two decades, needed nothing less than a win to keep things a single-point race.

But red-hot APS Bomet, fueled by generous bonuses for their recent victories, showed no mercy on the giant trophy drought.

The goals arrived in the second half, after both sides played out a cagey affair in the opening period- which only saw Ingwe create one real chance just before the break. Tyson Otieno nearly put his team ahead, only for Maxwell Mulili to deny him.

Once the second half got underway, the Law Enforcers turned up the heat with sharp counterattacks.

Phillip Wasai gave his side the opener following a sloppy moment from Kelly Madada, who was dispossessed on the left wing.

Hansel Ochieng then charged down that flank and volleyed the ball forward. It landed at Wasai’s left foot, and he unleashed a shot that curled into the right corner for the lead in the 58th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors four minutes later. The league debutants launched another swift counter down the right wing, where poor marking allowed Festus Kipkemoi to race forward and whip in a long-range volley cross.

The ball flew toward the left wng, where Wasai rose high and directed his header into the net for the second goal.

Ingwe managed to pull one back in the dying moments through an own goal from Edward Masembe, but it was not enough to earn them the maximum points they desperately needed.

With this result, APS Bomet have stretched their unbeaten run to 10 matches, including eight straight wins, and have already booked their spot in next season’s campaign.

Meanwhile, Ingwe’s second-place finish will fuel their ambitions for the coming season.
