Bidco United end 17-match drought with victory over Ulinzi
  • Bidco United end 17-match SportPesa League drought with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ulinzi Stars.
  • Bill Okite netted an unfortunate own goal on Monday, March 2, at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga.
  • Meanwhile, Sofapaka’s struggles deepened following a 3-1 defeat to Mara Sugar, while APS Bomet fell 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz.

Ulinzi Stars ended up beating themselves after Bill Okite turned the ball into his own net, handing Bidco United their first win in 18 matches during Round 23 of the SportPesa League at the Wang’uru Stadium on Monday.

The Oilers had gone through a rough spell with 10 losses and seven draws in that stretch and they finally snapped that frustrating run and did it in style, especially since they completed a double over Ulinzi Stars.

Their last win was over the same side back in October 2025, and now they have condemned the Stephen Ocholla-led charges to their eighth game without a win, pushing them deeper into the relegation zone while pulling themselves out of it.

Bidco almost broke the deadlock just four minutes in when Herman Ngala found himself clean through on goal inside the box, but his heavy touch let him down, wasting what could have been an early lead.

The rest of the first half remained tightly contested, with Ulinzi struggling to make the most of their chances. Boniface Muchiri came close twice from free kicks, but both were dealt with by the Bidco defense.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Bidco won a corner on the left wing. Thomas Wainaina swung the ball into the box, and after a Bidco player got his head to it, the ball fell to Herman Ngala.

He fired a head shot back into the box, and in a twist of fate, it deflected off Ulinzi’s Bill Okite and into his own net, gifting the hosts the lead going into the break.

Ulinzi pushed for an equalizer in the second half, and Issa Emuria pulled off a brilliant save to keep them at bay.

Muchiri delivered a looping volley into the box that found Mwinyi Chibato, whose header struck the bottom of the post and looked destined for the back of the net until Emuria sprinted across and collected the ball right on the line.

The Soldiers kept fighting for at least a point, but luck was not on their side. After more than four months without a win, Bidco United finally got the job done, dragging Ulinzi further into relegation trouble.

APS Bomet & Sofapaka’s SportPesa League fate grows bleaker

Elsewhere, Kakamega Homeboyz fought their way back into the top four after edging out APS Bomet 2-1 at the Bukhungu Stadium.

Homeboyz skipper Moses Mudavadi opened the scoring in the first half with a well-taken header, but Joseph Masibo restored parity for the Law Enforcers after the break. The hosts responded quickly, though Shafika Batambuze delivered a pinpoint set piece to reclaim the lead.

The win gave Homeboyz a valuable three points and a better standing on the log, while condemning the league debutants to their 12th loss of the season.

APS Bomet remain 17th, and with relegation looming, they could be heading back to the National Super League after just one season.

Things are looking even grimmer for Sofapaka, who seem destined for the drop after falling 3-1 away to Mara Sugar. The former champions are yet to win in their last 15 matches, managing just three draws and losing 12 in that run.

Dennis Cheriyot opened the scoring for the Sugar Millers before Alex Imbusia doubled their lead in the first half. Malick Ntamba pulled one back for Sofapaka just before the break, but Imbusia completed his brace with a third goal in the second half to seal the win.

Mara Sugar picked up their sixth win of the season, while Sofapaka’s 15th loss leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table with just 14 points Ezekiel Akwana’s men now staring at relegation straight to the second division.
