Angola and Egypt were forced to settle for a share of the spoils after playing out a tense 0-0 draw in their final Africa Cup of Nations group-stage encounter, a result that reflected a match full of industry, tactical discipline and missed opportunities rather than cutting edge in front of goal.
With progression to the knockout stages already assured, Egypt’s technical bench opted for rotation, leaving headline names Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush on the bench.
The decision allowed fringe players to stake a claim while preserving key legs for the business end of the tournament.

Salah’s Egypt qualify for AFCON 2025 Round of 16
Angola, by contrast, named a strong and familiar starting XI, knowing that only a positive result could keep their slim qualification hopes alive.
The contest began in a stop-start fashion, shaped by a physical midfield battle and frequent fouls that disrupted any early rhythm.
Egypt dominated possession for long spells, calmly circulating the ball across the back and through midfield, but struggled to turn that control into clear-cut chances.
Angola were content to sit compact, springing forward quickly whenever space opened up, particularly through wide areas and set-piece situations.

The Pharaohs came closest in the first half through Mostafa Mohamed.
The striker first dragged a shot wide from a tight angle before later rising highest at a corner, only to head over from close range when it seemed easier to hit the target.
Angola responded with purpose, with Mabululu proving a handful inside the penalty area.
The forward twice tested Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir from close range, forcing the shot-stopper into sharp saves that kept the scores level heading into the break.
After the restart, Angola emerged with renewed intent and almost found the breakthrough within minutes.
Fredy stepped up to take a direct free kick on the edge of the box and struck the post with a superb effort that had Shobeir beaten. It was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock and lifted the tempo of the contest.

Egypt responded by increasing their intensity, with Zizo and Ibrahim Adel both forcing saves from Hugo Marques as the game opened up.
Angola continued to threaten on the counter, with Manuel Benson a constant source of danger, firing narrowly wide on several occasions, while M’Bala Nzola also went close after a swift transition.
In the closing stages, Angola pushed numbers forward in search of a decisive goal. Benson and Show both tried their luck from distance deep into stoppage time, but neither effort found the target.
Egypt, compact and organised, absorbed the late pressure and comfortably saw out the closing minutes.

The stalemate ultimately had little impact on the group standings. Egypt, having already secured qualification with wins in their opening two matches, move on to the knockout rounds unbeaten.
Angola finish third and must now wait and hope that results elsewhere fall in their favour to keep their tournament alive.
While the scoreline may have lacked goals, the encounter offered a clear insight into both sides’ strengths and limitations, setting the stage for what promises to be a compelling knockout phase at AFCON.
