  • The semifinal fixtures are set: KCB vs MMUST, while Strathmore Leos take on Menengai Oilers in what promises to be an action-packed final four.

KCB Rugby continued their commanding run in the 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit, advancing to a fourth consecutive semifinal after overcoming Kabras Sugar in the Embu 7s quarterfinal on Sunday morning at the Njukiri Showgrounds.

Furthermore, the Millers who have yet to reach a major cup final this season, also remain winless against KCB, a team they have now faced three times in this year’s series.

As a result, the Bankers, in pursuit of their third title of the season following victories at Driftwood and Christie 7s, will face MMUST in the Main Cup semifinal.

MMUST managed to edged past Nakuru RFC in a tense second quarterfinal.

Meanwhile, Kabras will be aiming to finish strongly as they take on Nakuru in the fifth-place semifinal.

Elsewhere, Strathmore Leos also punched their ticket to the semifinals after a comprehensive victory over the Daystar Falcons.

They will be seeking a return to the finals after missing out at the Christie 7s and are set to play the Menengai Oilers, who managed to edge out Kenya Harlequins.

The Harlequins, who are also yet to reach a final this season, will aim to finish their campaign positively against the Daystar Falcons in the other fifth-place semifinal.

Embu 7s Quarterfinal Recaps

Match 1: KCB 21-5 Kabras Sugar

The Bankers were first on the scoreboard, with Samwel Asati dotting down under the posts after a brilliant assist by Floyd Wabwire, who executed a clever chip kick behind the Kabras defense. Brian Wahinya added the extras for a 7-0 lead.

William Mwanji’s side extended their advantage before the break as George Ooro finished off a sweeping move on the left wing. Wahinya’s conversion gave KCB a commanding 14-0 halftime lead.

Kabras responded early in the second half through Brian Mutua, reducing the deficit to 14-5.

However, Wabwire’s electrifying pace proved decisive again as he dashed down the flank for KCB’s third try.

Wahinya’s successful conversion sealed a 21-5 victory and a fourth consecutive semifinal for the defending champions.

Match 2: MMUST 21-19 Nakuru RFC

Nakuru RFC opened the scoring with a try by Chrisant Ojwang, but MMUST responded emphatically.

A brace from Clarence Hope and a try by Donald Litali gave them a 19-5 lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Nakuru rally with tries from Joel Okelo and Felix Okoth, both converted by Habbakhuk Ouma, leveling the scores at 19-19 and pushing the game into extra time.

After a brief review, it was confirmed that MMUST had converted all three tries, earning them a narrow 21-19 victory.

They now progress to face KCB in a rematch of the Driftwood 7s semifinal.

Match 3: Strathmore Leos 29-5 Daystar Falcons

Victor Mola opened the scoring for the Leos with an early try. Arnold Muita then doubled the lead, and Elton Malemba added a third just before halftime for a 15-0 cushion.

In the second half, Mola secured his second try, which Muita converted, extending the lead to 22-0.

Muita then crossed the whitewash himself, and Brian Mwendwa’s conversion brought the final score to 29-0.

Daystar Falcons managed a consolation try through Vincent Omuroka, but the match firmly belonged to Strathmore, who march on to their fourth semifinal of the season.

Match 4: Menengai Oilers 19-14 Kenya Harlequins

Menengai Oilers staged an impressive comeback from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the overall defending champions 19-14 in a thrilling quarterfinal clash.

Tries from Brian Achacha, Daniel Kipchirchir, and Alvin Khavoli secured the win, with Philip Okeyo and Kipchirchir adding the crucial conversions.

As a result, the Oilers will be pushing even harder in Embu, aiming to go one step further than they did at the Christie 7s, where they reached the final but narrowly lost to KCB.
