George Ooro Shujaa Captain

Kenya 7s co-captain George Ooro has stated that the team will be out to gauge themselves in the Perth 7s taking place from 24-26 January in Australia having been drawn in a tough pool consisting of Fiji, New Zealand and Uruguay.

Speaking during the squad naming that took place at the RFUEA Grounds on Wednesday, Ooro welcomed the challenge they are going to face from rugby powerhouse New Zealand and double Olympic champions Fiji who currently top the standings after two rounds.

“Heading to Perth, with Fiji and New Zealand in our pool, I always say that playing against the best is an opportunity to be the best. As a team, we are very ready and personally, I am eager to take on the top teams and see what we can achieve,” he said.

Ooro also welcomed back Brian Tanga and Vincent Onyala who missed the first two rounds of the global series in Dubai and Cape Town.

“The camp we had last week in Nakuru was very productive. We had intense competition and we’re excited to welcome back our two brothers Brian Tanga and Vincent Onyala. It’s great to have them back,” Ooro said.

On his part, Wambua emphasized that there are no easy pools in the series and that the team is focused on treating every match as a final.

“We had a week-long camp in Nakuru where we took time to regroup as a team, shake off the holiday indulgence and get down to business. We analysed our performances in Cape Town and Dubai and studied what our upcoming opponents will bring to the table,” he said after naming the squad.

“We’ve reviewed our process, and we see that it’s really working. This is what we will stick to as we head into Perth,” Wambua added.

He further highlighted the team’s approach to their overall performance in the Perth Sevens.

“We aim to improve both on and off the ball. We’re not focusing solely on set pieces and attack while neglecting our defense. Defense has been crucia and it secured us some important victories in Dubai and Cape Town,” he noted.
